Details:

This very unique 16th century Afghan hardwood cased Apothecary Mortar and Pestle is gracefully shaped into an oblong boat form to accommodate its being packed relatively flat in a camels saddle bag. It is a traveling nomadic Apothecary for grinding herbs, dragon bones, (fossils), or what ever the doctor ordered. The inside is a boat shaped hard red Jasper trough mortar with the original brown Chalcedony pestle perfectly fitting from five centuries of use. The tarnished bronze hardware hinges and folding handles are in great shape but the lock and key from the front are missing. This solid expertly crafted artifact weighs 16.6 lbs, It is 16" long 8" wide and 7" high with the handles in open position. This Heirloom has undoubtedly seen many expeditions traveling the Silk and Jade Roads of the Himalayas and high deserts. If it could only tell of the many cures it has formulated in those harsh times and terrains. It is a pleasure to open the lid and find the perfectly fitted stone work mortar inside and then marvel at the perfect fit the pestle has in the bottom worn groove in the super hard pipestone red Jasper Mortar. Truly, "a piece of work"!
