Pair of Vintage Antique Imperial Chinese guardian lions aka Fu Dogs, Foo Dogs or Guardian Temple Dogs. They are beautifully and ornately carved from Honey Yellow Jade. Do you see how different their colors appear in the photos? The honey jade tone changes with different lighting. How cool is that? Each measures appx: 4.5" tall, 3" wide (at base) and 3.5" depth. Note the female is slightly chipped near the bottom front of it's base. Please see photos. These are nice to display in your home or work place or to use as bookends. Imperial Chinese guardian lions (often miscalled "Foo Dogs" or Fu dogs"in the West) originated and became popular in Chinese Buddhism, subsequently spreading to other parts of Asia and the west. The lions are always presented in pairs, a manifestation of yin and yang, the female represents yin and the male yang. The male lion has its right front paw on a ball or the world. The female is essentially identical, but has a cub under her paw, representing the cycle of life, nature and compassion. Symbolically, the female lion protects those dwelling inside the home while the male guards the structure itself. Sometimes the mouths are open or closed which depicts breath in and out and also symbolizes the enunciation of the sacred word "om".
