Hello Portlander, I am located in Jefferson, about an hour south of you, just off I-5. If this is too afar, you may not want to take the time to read this. But I have quite a number of happy buyers from Portland, so. . . This is a modernized, customized Singer 306 zig-zag / cam stitcher from the mid-fifties. The Singer 306 and its sisters the 206 and 319 are generally considered semi-obsolete. Though few people with one to sell mention it, this family of Singer machines were designed by Singer to use a now obsolete needle, the 206x13. Singer stopped manufacturing the 206x13 needles many years ago, and now you can only buy a facsimile in sizes12 and 14 from Schmetz, and they are expensive. Cloth points only, no ball points, and no leather points. For that reason, I have replaced the obsolete Singer rotary hook with a modern zig-zag hook made in Japan by Hirose at the time that a couple Japanese manufacturers, Janome and Riccar, were introducing their own machines using a similar rotary hook. Hirose produced this hook, the TA1-Z16 specifically as an upgrade to fit the shaft size of theSinger 306 and 319. This hook was designed to work with standard 15x1 / 705H / HAx1 flat shank home needles, so this modernized machine will now work with any and all standard home sewing machine needles. I had two 306 machines, a tan one and a black one, and since they are essentially the same except the paint jobs, I swapped the nose cover panel, the top cover, the belt guard, and the zig-zag stitch controllers between the two machines, which makes the paint jobs a little snazzier, and mo' unique. The 306 and 319 have the best LMR [Left-Middle-Right] needle positioner of any machine I've ever used. This allows you to place the stitch line very close to either the left or right long sections of the feed dog, for very efficient and reliable feeding of for example, narrow hems. It also allows you to adjust precisely the zig-zag width and position for guide feet like the overcasting foot. The post-war motor that Singer used on the 306 and 319 was built into a plastic case that tended to make the motor loud and cheap-sounding. I replaced the stock motor with an earlier Singer motor that is much quieter and smoother sounding. This greatly improves the overall enjoyment of using this excellent machine. I fitted this machine with a Husqvarna Viking foot control, which is oneof the nicest in its power range. I also replaced the old-school screw-type presser-bar pressure regulator with the more convenient Japanese push-button style. In addition, I made sure the presser bar springs were chosen to provide the low pressures needed to sew stretch knits without splaying and uneven feeding. Included is an old Singer case. It looks pretty funky, but will protect the machine when not in use. If you don't need the case, let me know and we can deduct $20 from the price. The machine will mount in most standard tables that accept Singer or other Japanese standard machines like Janomes, Brothers, and etc etc etc. I have fully cleaned and re-lubricated the machine, and it is ready for a lifetime of service for its new owner. I am including an original Singer manual, and a nice set of snap-on presser feet including the standard zig-zag foot, a see-through satin-stitch foot, a straight stitch foot, a quilting foot, two zipper feet, normal and hidden, a button foot, a roller foot, a plastic foot, an overcasting foot, and an adjustable blind-hem foot. I am also including 23 original Singer flat cams, including the three-step zig-zag and the blind-hem cams as well as the standard zig-zag cam. So here you have it, a fully modernized low-mileage Singer 306 that is fully compatible with all home sewing machine needles from the 15x1 families, including Japanese HAx1 and HLx5 families, as well as German 705H families. Also included are the original manual, and upgraded deluxe carbon foot control compatible with the high quality motor, a good set of presser feet, eight empty bobbins, a small screwdriver for adjusting bobbin thread tension, and an assortment of high quality needles including 5 each of the following sizes: 18, 16, 14, and 12 in sharp points, and 14 and 12 ball points. You need to use ball-point needles for sewing knits. Of course, all this custom work comes at a price, not just for parts, but for the labor and experience to choose, install, and adjust for proper operation. I have sold a number of machines on ebay, so if you go there and do an advanced search for user "chalkblue" you can read my feedback record for sewing machine sales. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via Craigslist messaging. I'm in Jefferson, about an hour south of Portland. But it might be worth your time.
