Here's an awesome and rare little amp with a terrific sound -- a Gretsch G5222 - that's been tweaked for a tone that's quite a bit better than the already-impressive stock sound. I swapped out the original speaker for a Weber alnico Sig 6 that sounds gorgeous in this application. I also removed the stock baffle and replaced it with a very clean piece of ¼" plywood and a very thin piece of light chocolate brown grill cloth. The power tube has been upgraded to a Tung-Sol 6V6 and the preamp tube is a nice JJ 12AX7. These easy mods really open up the sound. And if you really want to turn this into a fire-breather (I dig the stock circuit, personally), there are a variety of circuit mods detailed in numerous online blogs. The original tube charts on these are screwed to the inside bottom of the cabinet, and next to it a wide strip of Velcro is stapled to the bottom, too. I've removed them both, but they are included -- as is the original speaker, baffle and grill cloth assembly, hang tag, cover and shipping box. This amp can be brought back to stock in about 15 minutes if one wishes (but the stock and mod sounds are worlds apart). Although it probably doesn't the tone, I also sprayed 10 coats of shellac on the cabinet's tweed fabric to protect it and give it a bit more of an old-school vibe. The circuit on the G5222 is identical to the Fender Champion 600, and I've owned four of those little beasts as well. They're really a perfect amp for a home, condo or apartment. Neither of these amps are produced any more, and the Gretsch version is nearly impossible to find -- especially in this condition. Here is some information from Gretsch: Five watts. Two tubes. Two inputs. Too cool! Designed by guitarists, the low-output, easy-to-record Electromatic G5222 guitar amp is ideal for small-room jam sessions and recording projects. Crank the amp's volume and adjust the guitar's controls for a variety of sounds. Not only does it spank, sparkle and growl, but the visual factor is undeniably Gretsch. FEATURES Wattage: 5 watts Impedance: 4 ohms Speaker: One 6", 4 ohm Special Design driver with ceramic magnet Channels: Two (High and Low Sensitivity) Controls: Single volume control Extension Jack: External speaker output Inputs: High-gain and low-gain inputs Handle: Leather strap handle SPECIFICATIONS Height: 11", (28 cm) Width: 12", (31 cm) Depth: 7.5", (19 cm) Weight: 15 lbs., (7 kg) Tubes: Tube preamp and tube power amp (one 12AX7 tube; one 6V6 tube) 4.3 OUT OF 5 stars in 19 reviews on Musician's Friend: By lemonworld: I gave this 5 stars, because this amp does everything it promises - simple, pure tube tone. For the price, it's a nice amplifier, and looks gorgeous! Most of the photos out there don't quite capture the deep yellow of the tweed. Tone is nice with both humbuckers and single coils. The 6" speaker can get a bit muddy on the low end. I hear differing accounts of where - or even if - there is any tube breakup. Around 10 o'clock, mine gets some crackle, and with the volume cranked, you can make it scream fairly well! This amp can go much further with a few easy mods, as well. The argument is, "If I have to mod it, why not buy a better amp?" It really depends. If you love simplicity in tone and design, and want something very portable, then why not make this unique little amp even more special? I swapped out the stock tubes (Sovtek 6V6 and Electro Harmonix 12ax7), changed the grill cloth (highly recommended) and put in an 8" Weber AlNiCo speaker. It has taken the amp to a whole new level, and held up against my drummer at jam. Mostly I use this amp for home practice and small solo gigs. If you want to hear it stock, I've got a video here. By musicfreak80: same as fender champ 600, has a crappy 6v6 made in china, russian 12ax7, crappy speaker, replaced speaker with a weber 7oz AlNiCo speaker, put a old RCA 6v6GT and a telefunken 12ax7 in and wow a good amp. you can get by with just changing the speaker and the 6v6, all current made 6v6's are crap, get a NOS or a used tested tube. but for about $85 dollars more you can make it a good little amp with great tones for recording By metalhed22: Well, I got this amp to play just jazz stuff on because my 75 watt line6 wasn't the best for that sort of thing. It sounds great for jazz, very warm and thick, but if you set your guitar up right it can be dark and mellow too. But I was surprised by the versatility--if turn the volume up, you can get a pretty sweet blues tone, but that's the problem! I can't play jazz at a loud volume because it comes out distorted! But the 2 input jacks even it out though. The extra one is a cool little bonus if you want to jam with friends but you've only got one amp. This amp is very portable and the great thing for me is the simplicity! I'm telling you I can't get over it 1 knob! I'm used to messing around with solid states for up to 30 minutes before I get the tone I want. But this takes no screwing around. Overall it's a great buy--portable, has great tone, and simple. By paul: Reading the reviews most sound like they are talking about a different amp then the Gretsch and I'm no different. My Gretsh is (if you can believe) has NO noise up to 11. its a fine sounding amp but has little to no overdrive with different guitars I tried. But, I do like it very much for practice because what you put in is what you get out. I did swap out the tubes to Groove tube.. there are so many types of them.. well I threw out the little boxes awhile ago so don't know where they were made etc. But I do know it went from a hard sound to a sweet sound that I like. guess there are plenty of mods for this amp to emulate the old fender champ. I'm not "wowed" over by the amp however its always a nice surprise when there is no noise to drive me crazy and have such a fine sound just wish it could be pushed into over drive without any help.. also, my Gretsch is loud. Wasn't expecting that and it doesn't cause blood to run out my ears.I'm going to try my friends cab with one 12' and see what happens this weekend. Its plenty worth the cost-but if all possible try one out with your favorite guitar. I do use it for practice about 3 hours early in the AM and 3 in the PM (someday I'll learn how to play) so it has payed for it self in my eyes because a couple of other low power amps I have tried developed problem. Forgot.. one of my guitars sounds really good with it, a Fender Jazzmaster The little 6 inch speaker accents the "scooped out sound" I have dialed in and it gets a little over drive. Am I wowed by this amp, no, would I buy another if this one explodes, Yes.I hate this expression . but.. "it is what it is" lastly, its built very sturdy and looks pretty cool By Serban Dragosloveanu: hi.i bought this amp from my gretsch dealer in Bucharest.i liked the nice distorsion.i crancked up after 7-8vol.since then i made some mods including the 5E1 spec and 5E1 feedback circuit.i replaced the ceramic speaker with a weber alnico and moved the baffle a little to the left for tube clearence!the grill cloth it`s now a little excentric but it`s ok.i also gave it a nitro paint!the electroharmonix tubes are nice.what i got in return it`s a louder amp that breaks earlier, around 4-5.it has a lot more bass and middle.the ceramic it was too crisp, now the sound it`s more round.i have a fender custom 57 tweed also, and the sound it`s not the same, but it`s like a modern tweed with a fuzzier voice.it`s a nice addition to my collection.in the future i should change the cloth also to a potato type.:)after the mods you loose the clean a little, but it`s worth it.so buy it! By LoveThatJag: This is a great amp for practicing or recording. For live shows, I use either a '69 Bassman or '90s Ampeg VL-102 (and have run through other tube amps). This is a simple unit that does its job well. Clean, nice mellow character, no noise, takes effects well, an lets you use various guitars/tone settings to shape you sound (not everything sounds the same through it). Very responsive, e.g., to the difference between single coil and humbuckers. Good to have around if you need something small for home, are just getting started, or want something for recording. By lokivip: the quality on this amp is very good, well made, very solid amp so i gave it a 5 out of 5. The value for this amp is good too, i know the fender champ is around $150 but i personally dint care for the sound as much as this gretsch and it also wasn't as solid as the g5222, so i would pay the extra $50 (of course sound is a personal choice). Now your probably wondering why i gave this amp a 5 out of 5 for its features even though it only has one volume control, but the reason is because its so simple to use (no stress) and thats what i was looking for. Ive also read some other reviews saying the amp when the volume is turned up all the way has no distortion, this is true but it does have great sound that is nice and warm. not only that but i love the look of the amp and that was another reason why i say its an overall great amp. but before you buy any amp remember that it is all personal choice so i recommend that you look up some videos on youtube to see if you personally like the sound of the amp. By 66toSoCal: Tried this and it lost out to the Marshall 5 watter but twoce the price for that one so owuld not compare them head to head. I really liked this little amp. Maybe not such a usefull sound cranked up but sure has a sweet spot around 4 or so and for the price range it would be great. It looks awesome too, doesn't it? Might buy one just to say I did if I have extra spiff laying around some day. By Pierre-ODzsC: I bought this amp a month ago and it is great. I use it with my Gretsch 5120 and the sound is perfect. There is only one volume but the is really good. You get two imputs but i only use the high imput. When you bring your volume past the mid point, the amp start a nice distortion. To conclude it is a very good amp for the price and very easy to carry to gigs. By Green Goblin: As people have already stated the Gretch is a great amp for the price. It has essentially the same circuit as the fender champ 600, and now is cheaper after fender raised the prices. My only complaint is that the amp gets muddy when you crank up the volume. This is remedied by swapping out the stock speaker for an after market one by Ted Weber. This speaker makes the highs sparkle, and really cleans up the low end. Perfect amp for apartment/shared house settings. I'd pick this amp over the similarly priced solid states because im of the opine that its better to get one great sound out of an amp, instead of many mediocre ones. By Elvis2: I wanted a tube amp suitable for practicing with at home, I was initially going to buy a Fender Champion 600 but they werent available at the time, I bought this one instead and dont regret doing so, this is a really great amplifier.Ok, heres the deal, if you arent a good guitar player and you use a guitar that doesnt sound very good this amplifier will do nothing to hide those shortcomings, Line6 or Roland make amplifiers for those guitar players, this one is a tube amp with a really simple signal path, there is no onboard eq or reverb and it doesnt do high gain crunch unless you put some kind of distortion pedal in front of it.But what it does do is sound really great, using my Les Paul and no pedals and cranking the amp to the point where its just starting to break up I get a beautiful tone with just a hint of compression from the tubes, also the range of different sounds I get from this amplifier by merely switching between pickups and using the volume/tone knobs on the guitar is amazing.Im not too keen on the way this amplifier distorts at full volume but if I need distortion I will just use an overdrive pedal anyway, I havent gotten around to replacing the tubes yet but im sure it will sound even better with some new/old tubes.Until I bought this amp I had been using a Roland Microcube at home and while I like that amp for certain things there is no comparison between that amp and this one, the Microcube is just a toy, this is the real deal! By OutLoudHeyHey: I was pleasantly surprised by this little amp when I tried it at a store. It's got a real sweet and warm tube tone and it's got plenty of volume on tap. I was surprised to find I didn't need to go much more than a third of the way up. I had a Washburn HB30 plugged in, and with no EQ on or in front of it, it sounded alright, if a little flat. I ran it through a demo chain of Boss effects (particularly their equalizer pedal), and boosted the top end and then it came to life. It had a lot of sparkle and chime. If I had the money to spare for a practice amp, I'd certainly consider this one. By LesPaul&StratLover: That one word - Layla - describes it. It has a well-defined, if slightly boxey clean sound with nice high end. Overdrive is terrible and shrill because the speaker is too small. I plugged it into my Marshall 1960BV cabinet with a TS9 and it sounds like 70's Eric Clapton. Awesome classic rock sounds for the money. By Southern Hawk: This amp is great for a basic tube tone. For classic rock sounds, blues, or vintage sounds this amp can really deliver. There are few features...but these can be added through effects units or mods. I use this amp with a DD-3 Delay or SD-1 Overdrive and it is really amazing. You can also disconnect (1/4" cable) the tiny speaker and run it into a bigger cab and produce some overwhelming, dirty tone that way. By nopicksplease: My friends an I jam together on a regular basis. Most of the time we use our acoustics because we don't feel like lugging our 40 pound amps everywhere (especially if we're outside by the swimming pool). I decided to take a chance on a travel amp, the solid state amps couldn't make my tele sound as good as my fender tube amp, so I picked this one up and have enjoyed it as much as the person plugged in with me. My only disappointment is that it has no features other than volume, so if you need verb or some distortion-you need to get some pedals. By Random Hero: This amp is basically a fender 600 champion with the kinks worked out. The amp sounds great and has a very classic clean sound until 1/3 or so of the way up when it starts developing a nice crunch. The Fender required you to crank the darn thing to get a crunchy sound. The Gretsch is loud enough to play small gigs with, though it's really more of a practice and recording amp. It is very responsive in playing, much moreso than the Fender 600 or Epi Valve Jr. I use one of these when giving lessons; the unrivaled portability and 2 inputs make it perfect. You won't be disappointed with this amp. By Zach-isoc.: I first played this amp in a local store, and I was in a bit of disbelief towards the fact that it sounded so good. I started looking around, and I found that I was not the only person that felt this way...just do a google search on the amp to find reviews. The amp has no hum, and it sounds great distorted, clean, and everything in between. It is simple and bare-bones, with one volume knob, and high-gain, low-gain inputs--all you have to do is flip it on and go. My only knock is that there isn't an onboard eq--but you can manipulate that through a pedal. I recently used it at a show in front of about 2,500 people, and it sounded phenomenal--of course, I had a mic on it, but I'm not complaining because it sounds like a full-size, stage tube-amp--for $200. I sold my regular stage amp, bought another one of these, and play them exclusively.Buy this amp... Here's some info from Weber on its Alnico Signature 6 speaker: Replacement for Fender Champion 600 (reissue, not original early 50's model) and other amps using 6" speakers. 6", 7oz AlNiCo magnet, 4 ohms, 15 watts, 1" voice coil, smooth cone for early breakup, low detail, low headroom, crunch tone. Ohm: 4 Watts: 15 Weight: 2.25 lbs Diameter: 6.5" Depth: 3.6875" Cutout size: 4.75" And some reviews: JIM March 29,2018 GREAT UPGRADE FOR A CHAMION 600 Replaced a Jensen Vintage Ceramic I had purchased because Weber 6's were out of stock at the time. Decided later I wanted to try an alnico - great decision. It's like a different amp - the Jensen was almost shrill by comparison. The Weber 6 sounded more warm and open - kinda fuzzy, if you will. Planning on getting a 10 for my Super Champ down the road. Good folks to deal with too, very responsive to a couple of questions (C.J. in particular). Great product by a great company. JEREMY February 05,2017 UNBELIEVABLE DIFFERENCE This speaker is fantastic! The clarity and articulation is remarkable. There is a Significant increase in overall perceived volume. I just love it. I would highly recommend it and I will be looking to purchase some other products in the catalog in the future. I can't wait to spread the good word! WILLIE November 15,2016 ALNICO SIGNATURE 6A-E I installed this speaker in the champion 600 in about ten minutes. I couldn't believe how great it sounded! Night & day difference from the stock speaker! Before this upgrade I hardly ever played through this amp, it never gave me a reason to keep playing it. I almost sold it. Awesome speaker!!! It's like I have a brand new amp. I'm very satisfied thanks guys! JASON June 13,2016 TIGHT FIT IN A G5222, BUT AWESOME TONE. I finally got the Sig 6 installed in the Gretsch G5222, and it sounds outstanding. Just superb. Cleans are full and Fender-y crisp, and the drive fattens up and blooms in a really awesome way. Tough to believe it's a 6" speaker, honestly, and it beats the death out of the thin, raspy stocker. And loud! Best upgrade for the amp so far. As for installation, I couldn't get it to fit the stock enclosure, even with a short Tung Sol power tube. I ended up moving the speaker baffle about 1/4" to the left, which required drilling new mounting holes in the baffle. A little hack-y, but functional for now. It's not entirely necessary, but I'll probably cut a new baffle in the future. LES April 05,2016 WORTH EVERY PENNY AND MORE "I was looking for a small watt, bluesy yet grunty amp when pushed ..all valve of course ! .. chose a Gretsch g5222 (aka Fender 600) ...it wasn't cutting it. Thanks to CJ and the guys at Weber!! NOT LOOKING FOR ANY TRADES. IF THE AD IS UP, IT'S STILL FOR SALE. I TAKE PAYPAL. I'LL SHIP ON THE BUYER'S DIME.
