This is by far the most powerful motor on any production cargo bike. For example, the Spicy Curry has only 250 watt motor. Other cargo bikes forgo the mid drive completely and use a hub motor. Hub motors are very heavy, impossible to service, and have no hill climbing power (torque). The Battery: This bike runs on a 48V 14.5Ah lithium Ion battery with premium Samsung cells. This is a powerful battery that provides 700 watt hours of power. By way of comparison, the Spicy Curry battery provides 400 watt hours, and the Radwagon cargo bike battery carries 670 watt hours. We do not use hub motors for our bikes: The only reason why hub motors are used on production bikes are because they are very inexpensive as compared to the mid dive motors. Hub motors pedal smooth and are fine if your route is on level roads with few hills. Hub motors tend to over heat once in the hills and when that occurs they either shut down or burn out. Hub motors are also significantly heavier than mid drives and make them impossible to work on without special lifts. Many bike shops refuse to repair a rear flat that is on a hub motor! Hub motors also block access to the disc brake adjustment cam. The only way you can adjust your brakes is to remove the entire rear wheel. Hub motors also require external controllers whereas mid drive motors have a internal controller. The Bafang mid drive is simple, powerful, and easy to maintain and that is why the Bafang company produces over one million of these motors every year.
