"Los Toros de Burdeos" (usually referred to as "The Bulls of Bordeaux") was a work of four lithographic prints depicting bullfighting scenes executed by Spanish old master, Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828). They were lithographed in 1825 by the celebrated printer Gaulon (Bordeaux, France). It was Cyprien-Charles-Marie Nicolas Gaulon (French, 1777-1858) who first taught Goya lithography technique during the artist's exile in Bordeaux towards the end of his life. The original run of 100 prints utilized lithographic crayon and scraper, which Goya fully explored in Bordeaux. Original proofs of the series are rare, very sought after and reach elevated prices. I'm offering here a set of four limited edition lithographed reproductions that were made from an original collection housed in the Museo de Huesca (Aragon, Spain) by Spanish wine producer Bodega Pirineos in 1996 on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Goya's birth. The four scenes include: "El famoso americano Mariano Ceballos" ("The Famous American Mariano Ceballos")-- Mariano Ceballos was a Mexican bullfighter who gained much attention for his feats, especially piercing the bull with a pike while mounted on another bull. He was also capable of killing a bull while mounted on his horse. "Bravo toro" ("Brave Bull")--depicts a picador in the moment he is caught on the bull's horns. "Dibersión de España" ("Spanish Entertainment")--depicts a bullfighter being trampled by four bulls. "Plaza Partida" ("Bullfight in a Divided Ring")--depicts two bullfights in the same arena. The prints are reproduced black and white on heavy-weight, wove texture cream-colored paper stock. All prints carry a Bodega Pirineos embossing in the lower right-hand corner. Each is in excellent condition. No tears or stains. Sold only as a complete series.
