Details:
Wilbur is an 11-year-old male boxer (with some sweet pit bull in his lineage) who needs a new home. We adopted him from the Wake Animal Shelter but is not a good fit for our family after all (unique situation). Wilbur is being treated for heartworms and has some hemangioma sarcoma spots (very slow growing, surface tumors). He loves to run around the back yard, chasing squirrels and burying bones. But he doesn't dig in the yard. He has no idea what to do on a leash, so he'll do best in a home with a fenced yard where he can exercise untethered. His former foster family tried introducing him to other dogs with mixed results, so he'll need to be your only pet. He minds well, knows to sit, lay down, shake hands, and go to his bed. He is fully house trained. He loves to lay next to you if you let him but will stay on his bed if not invited to share the couch. Wilbur becomes VERY attached to his people and is anxious when left alone. A person who is home during the day or can bring him to work on a regular basis will be the best fit for Wilbur. He is a low-energy good boy and doesn't demand play time, just likes to be close to his people for head and belly scratches. He is very friendly around new people; visitors to our office are always happy to give him a pat on the head while he wags his tail. He does not bark or jump on people. Why not a good fit for us? My young adult son is disabled and Wilbur is anxious about people taking care of him, because he thinks my son is injured and he wants to "help." My son had a fall with a caregiver and that heightened Wilbur's anxiety and now is constantly underfoot and trying to stay between the caregiver and my son. Unfortunately it's become an unsafe situation for all. This makes us sad because Wilbur is such a sweetheart. We are willing to assist financially with his continued heartworm treatment ("fast kill treatment" is planned over the next few months) and needed surgery to remove a few of his tumors (size of a pencil eraser). His vet and oncologist are in Cary. We don't want to take him back to the shelter because due to his age and health conditions he might not be adoptable :-(
