Tony Sutherland guitar bodied octave mandolin, Koa back and sides, Spruce top, Koa neck, Ebony fingerboard with pearl inlay Ebony bridge, and body binding, solid brass tailpiece This is a flat-top instrument with a floating bridge and tailpiece similar in style to a Selmer or Maccaferri gypsy jazz guitar 23" scale length, fingerboard width at the nut is 1.6" string spacing at the bridge is 1.8" string height (air gap) top of fret to bottom of string is 1/16+" to bass G strings, 1/16" to treble E strings Tony Sutherland is a guitar / mandolin builder who lived in New Mexico for a number of years, he studied instrument building with Stephen Owsley Smith who was also in New Mexico and later Hawaii. both gentlemen are currently "off the grid" no longer have web sites or appear to be currently building instruments, This Sutherland Octave Mandolin was built by Tony, using a body shape created by Stephen, the fingerboard inlay was based on a "stock" inlay pattern that Stephen used on his instruments, the soundhole rosette was of Tony's design. the instrument was the top raffle prize at the 2003 Zoukfest in New Mexico.
